TLS/SSL certificate
What is a TLS/SSL certificate?
The abbreviation TLS stands for Transport Layer Security and the other abbreviation SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. They are protocols for encrypting data that are intended to secure transmission within a computer network.
Because the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) on which the Internet is based is generally relatively insecure, the data is encrypted using a TLS / SSL protocol. TLS is the successor to SSL and has been used for certification since 2006. However, in colloquial language the abbreviation SSL is still used for certificates.
What SSL certificates are there?
There are basically 3 different types of SSL certificates. There are domain-validated certificates, organization-validated certificates and EV certificates with extended validation.
While domain validation is the simple and cheaper way for https, the EV-SSL certificate is the silver bullet among certifications. For browsers, extended validation is the highest-trust encryption.
Domain validation
The simplest and most common type of certification is domain validation. The certification authority simply checks whether the owner of the domain is the same as the applicant.
This certification is particularly suitable for smaller websites, blogs or mail servers.
Organizational validation
During organizational validation, in addition to comparing domain ownership, a further validation step is carried out. OrganizationSSL is authenticated using additional documents and a personal telephone contact.
This form of validation is suitable for websites of medium to large companies and online shops.
Extended Validation
Extended Validation is a little more complex, but has the greatest browser acceptance. In addition to the organization validation process, it is also checked whether the applicant can demonstrate the necessary authorization in the company. For this, the website gets the green address line in the browser. This validation is suitable for large companies and shops.
How do I get an SSL certificate for my domain?
The Internet is diverse, as are your individual technical requirements and wishes.
The following questions play an important role:
- For example, do you need a wildcard SSL certificate because you also want to include subdomains in https?
- Which operating system are you working with and can you use OpenSSL, LibreSSL or GnuTLS implementations?
- Maybe you even need an EV SSL certificate?
- Is there a comparison of TLS/SSL providers and which ones can I buy without hesitation?
